Evie the cat has moved up in the the Cabinet Office to be the new face of the Equalities Unit. The corridors of Whitehall might hold nothing more menacing for Evie than a large mouse or Chris Grayling, but in the time of the Pharoahs, cats could be relied upon to protect their humans from poisonous serpents.
The Cat Population Control Group (CPCG) – made up of a number of animal welfare groups, including the RSPCA, Cats Protection, Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, Blue Cross, PDSA and Vets 4 Pets, believes having kittens spayed when they reach four months of age rather than at the traditional six months stage will help reduce these figures.
A regional council in New Zealand has proposed banning all domestic cats in an attempt to protect native animals. The South Island council’s new “pest plan” calls for all domestic cats in the Omaui region to be neutered, microchipped and registered.
