For all the different news stories coming out of Downing Street this week, Boris Johnson adopting a new puppy for the famous residences is certainly the most light-hearted one, even if it isn’t welcome news for Larry the cat . The Prime Minister and his partner Carrie Symonds have adopted a puppy from an animal rescue charity in south Wales and he will live in the flat above No 11 Downing Street with the couple. The 15-week-old puppy was pictured arriving at his new home in London yesterday.

Here’s what we know about the sweet new addition so far.

What breed is Boris Johnson’s new dog?

The newest resident of Downing street is a Jack Russell-cross puppy. Mixed breeds are the 10th most popular in the UK according to ITV show Britain’s Favourite Dogs and the little pup had been rescued from a puppy farmer in south Wales before catching the eye of Boris and Carrie .

What is Boris Johnson’s dog’s name?

The PM’s new puppy has been named Dilyn, which is Welsh for ‘follow’, in a tribute to the part of the UK where he was born.

Although born into a puppy farm, Dilyn was rescued by Friends of Animals Wales in the Rhondda after he was abandoned for having an undershot and misaligned jaw, making him difficult for the puppy farmer to sell.

Carrie took to Twitter to heap praise on the charity for rescuing the pup, who she says otherwise would not have survived. ‘Thanks to the wonderful Eileen who rescued Dilyn after she got a tip-off that he was to be dumped by a puppy dealer because he was born with a crooked jaw,’ Carrie wrote on social media. ‘Eileen fixed his little jaw and saved his life. She is a hero.’
