"The physical presence has been constant for more than a year for our pets, especially the ones who you have adopted during the pandemic. Pets are creatures of routine, as they experience any change in that it reflects on their behaviour. Separation anxiety is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to leaving pets home alone. But, you take care of it if you put them in an all-new routine," says dog trainer Subhash Dholakia.
If you are a pet parent and heading back to work soon, then here are a few things that you can do to keep your pet happy at home.
Prepare them for your absence. You will have to change a few things about your day so that your pet knows that you will be away. "Wake up at the same time as you would, if you have to go to work, and wake your pet up too. Take them for a walk and feed them accordingly. This will create a cycle for them, and their body clock will function accordingly," says Subhash.
Create a comfortable and cosy space
They need to feel at home when you aren't around. So, comfortable space is a must. "If your pet spends most of the time in your room, set up a crate there, make it a warm and comforting area with their favourite toys. You can leave a clothing item of your's, or probably a bed sheet that both of you used, to keep your pet close to your smell. This will prevent your pet from freaking out as much," says Prakriti Sharma, a pet-care store owner and a pet parent.
Leave them with enough food and water.
"There are automatic food and water dispensers available in the market that functions through an app on your phone. Your pet will have enough food and water. You don't have to worry about the fact that your pet will overeat because the portions are rightly measured," says Prakriti.
Set up pee pads for them
Before you head back to the office regularly, start making your pet comfortable with peeing on a pee pad. If you are in an apartment and have no access to an open space, these pee pads can be helpful. You wouldn't want to come back home with lots of pee and poop around. So, pee pads in such a scenario can be a good option. "They are easy to discard. Place them in one corner, so just in case your pet needs to pee, it can go and do it there," says Subhash.
Teach your pet to be alone
This one is a habit that you need to instill in them. As much as it might kill you, you need to leave your pet alone before you permanently head to work. Start with a shorter period and then for longer hours. It will make them slowly used to your absence during your working hours. "Start smaller departures and make sure you adjust these go-aways based on your pet's reaction. And whenever you come back, make sure you praise your pup. He should know how amazing he has been doing," says Subhash.
Did you hear that? Sound frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz). The higher the Hertz, the higher-pitched the sound. Dogs hear best at 8,000 Hz, while humans hear best at around 2,000 Hz.
