In the hopes of securing him a loving family, staff threw the five-year-old a special Valentine’s Day party to encourage people find out more about the lovable dog, and potentially take him home with them.
However, Luke was left to celebrate the most romantic day of the year alone after nobody came to meet him.
Luke has now been at the charity’s Kent branch for 206 days, which is over five times longer than the average Battersea dog. Michelle Bevan, centre manager at Battersea Brands Hatch says: ‘Valentine’s Day is a time to show your appreciation for those you care about, so it’s heart-breaking knowing that Luke will be spending the day without anybody to love after nobody came to meet him for a date.Have an extra kitchen drawer? Use it as a dog food holder.
‘Despite being a large dog, Luke is really just a big softie and enjoys nothing more than to cuddle up by a radiator with his favourite people and a cuddly toy.
Turn an empty pancake-syrup bottle into a portable squirtable water bottle.
‘We’re really hoping that someone will love him for the big lapdog that he truly is and give him the chance to be loved as he deserves.’
Staff believe that the reason for Luke’s long search for love is down to him being a little insecure when it comes to building relationships with other dogs.Despite his size, Luke can be nervous at times and is looking for a person to help show him how to be more confident.
As Luke arrived at Battersea as a stray, staff don’t know much about his past. So, while Luke loves to be around people, his worries around other dogs means that he is looking to be the only dog in his new home.
INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOUR PET: Dogs can be trained to to detect cancer and other diseases in humans. Cancerous cells release different metabolic waste products than healthy cells in the human body. Dogs may even be able to sniff out cancer cells simply through smelling someone’s breath.
