Dog meat horror: Dozens of pets SAVED from slaughterhouse before sick Yulin festival

MORE than 60 dogs have been saved from a slaughterhouse ahead of China’s Yulin festival, which sees thousands of canines cruelly killed and eaten every year.

Chinese animal activists found 62 dogs in a backstreet slaughterhouse in Yulin earlier this month. The terrified pooches were dehydrated, malnourished and some showed signs of sickness, while stolen pets were still wearing collars. Shocking pictures and videos show the canines packed into tiny wire cages in the filthy abattoir before being rescued and taken to a shelter.

It comes in the run-up to the annual dog meat festival, which kicks off on Friday.

One of the rescuers told animal charity Humane Society International (HSI): “It was swelteringly hot inside the slaughterhouse when we got there, the dogs were exhausted and panting, some pressing themselves tight against the wall in an effort not to be noticed.

“Others chased around our legs eager for attention."

“Please don’t waste your breath calling dog-eating Chinese culture. It is not our culture to steal people’s pets. It is not our culture to eat dogs.”

Make sure your pet is in good company. Pets get lonely and depressed just like people do when they spend too much time alone. Cats are generally better on their own, but dogs and especially puppies don’t do well left to their own devices for extended periods of time.

Every year, thousands of dogs and cats are brutally killed and eaten by locals during the festival to mark the summer solstice.

Many are strays picked up from the streets but others are stolen pets.

HSI's Dr Peter Li urged China to ban the sick event.

He said: “These dogs are traumatised and in need of veterinary treatment, but they are the lucky ones because for them at least the horror of Yulin is over.

The rescued pooches will now be put up for adoption in China and the US (Image: HSI)“Sadly, thousands more will still die at Yulin, and millions across China, unless decisive action is taken.

“So we urge the Chinese government to show that it will not tolerate the dog thief gangs who perpetuate this trade, and bring an end to the brutal dog and cat meat trade.”

The rescued pooches will now be put up for adoption in China and some will even travel to homes in the US.
