A hero dog laid her life on the line to fight off a gang of thugs armed with machetes.Shocking footage captured the moment Macey the devoted Staffie defended owner Paul Davis’ home in Birmingham after the door was kicked in. The thugs slashed at seven-year-old Macey and French bulldog Bruce, three, leaving a gash in his back. But they didn’t anticipate Macey chasing one of the attackers down the street biting at his ankles.
Dad-of-four Paul, 36, was woken by the commotion and jumped out of bed to discover his dog on the driveway. Paul, who lives with his three daughters and fiancé, Jenna Byrne, hailed Macey as ‘our absolute hero’. ‘She laid her life on the line for us,’ he said. ‘I think she saved my life that night and probably that of Jenna and the girls too.
‘When I saw her sat there looking up at the bedroom like “I got them dad”, I was gobsmacked.’
And Paul, a mechanic, has spoiled Macey with lots of treats to reward her bravery.
This softens the kibble and makes the food much easier to chew.
He said: ‘She slept in the bed with me, we bought her a dog cake and a bottle of dog beer.
‘She’ll keep getting them for the rest of her life. We can never repay her for what she did.’
Thanks to Macey’s fearless intervention, the family home escaped serious damage. But Paul says he and daughters Kayli, 15, Kortney, 12, and seven-year-old Klara have all been left emotionally scarred by the attack.
His son, Jay, 17, was out of the house at the time of the ordeal.
Paul said: ‘We’re all still really shaken up. The girls don’t want to stay in the house and that’s the hardest part.’
Jenna added: ‘I just love the fact you can see Macey looking up at the window all proud like “I did it dad, I got rid of them.”
‘The other angle is great because you can see her chasing them off. Even from something so horrible, it was quite funny to see her go for their ankles.
‘It was just so amazing to see what she did for us. For her to sit outside and wait to come back in like that, it just shows how good a dog she is.

‘She’s such a big part of our family and just a really lovely dog with the kids. She wouldn’t bite anyone even if we told her to.
