A PET owner from Perth has been savagely attacked by his own dog.

The bull-mastiff cross launched at his owner Roy Santamaria, 49, yesterday and neighbours had to use a shovel to beat him off.

According to 7 News, Santamaria had been trying to get his three-year-old pet, Bronx, back into the yard of his Carlisle home after he bolted outside and into a bush block next door.

“He had big chunks taken out of his arm, blood all over his face,” one witness told 7 News.

“He had blood all over him.”

Nearby workers and neighbours saw what was happening and used a shovel to repeatedly hit Bronx.

Santamaria was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he was treated for deep bite marks on his arms and injuries to his chest and face.

Rangers from the Town of Victoria Park came to the property to collect the dog and are now investigating, according to The West Australian.

This is not the first time Santamaria has been mauled by his own dog, reported 7 News, and the pet is also well-known to local council rangers.

Bronx has been signed over to the local council which has the authority to put him down. However, the owner has a three-day “cooling off” period to decide whether or not to euthanise the dog.
